Lake Nona West Is Opening in Waves. Here's What's Already Behind the New Roundabouts.

August 6, 2026

If you drove east on Lake Nona Boulevard in April, the corner at Boggy Creek Road was still a construction fence and two fresh roundabouts most residents were learning to navigate one lap at a time. Drive it this week and Homesense has been open since May, Barnes & Noble since mid-June, Total Wine & More opened about a week after that, and a 149,000-square-foot Target quietly turned on its lights on July 26 with a full grocery section.

That is the story worth telling neighbors who already live here. Lake Nona West is not having a grand opening. It is having a nine-month drip, and the order in which stores come online is already reshaping what a Saturday errand run looks like for anyone within a ten-minute drive.

What's Open, What's Next

Tavistock Development Company's public schedule and follow-up coverage give a fairly precise sequence. Openings are staggered from May 2026 into early 2027.

Tenant Approximate opening Size
Homesense Mid-May 2026 24,979 sq ft
Barnes & Noble Mid-June 2026 15,597 sq ft
Total Wine & More Late June 2026 20,157 sq ft
Target July 26, 2026 ~149,000 sq ft
Dick's Sporting Goods & Golf Galaxy Late July 2026 66,562 sq ft
Nordstrom Rack August 2026 25,893 sq ft
Just Salad, Kilwins, Drybar, Gloss Nail Co., JETSET Pilates, Sephora Rolling through 2026 2,500 to 8,000 sq ft each
Cañonita Late 2026 9,321 sq ft

The center sits on 54 acres and totals 405,000 square feet, with pre-leasing already past 317,000 before the smaller tenants were announced. That's the frame. The interesting parts are what each wave actually changes for people who live off Narcoossee, Tavistock Lakes, or inside Laureate Park.

The Target Question Nobody Should Pretend Wasn't Real

Jessi Blakley at Tavistock told The Orlando Real that residents had been asking for a Target for nearly the community's entire 30-year history. That is a long time to drive to the Semoran store or the Narcoossee location down in St. Cloud for a $12 errand.

The Lake Nona store is not a small-format Target. At roughly 149,000 square feet it is one of the retailer's larger builds, staffed by about 270 team members, and it includes a full fresh grocery section with produce, meat, and dairy alongside Drive Up, Order Pickup, and same-day delivery through Target Circle 360. It is Target's 136th store in Florida and, according to the company's public plans, one of more than 30 new stores it is opening nationally in 2026.

What that means for a resident:

  • A grocery run that used to burn 40 minutes round-trip to Publix on Narcoossee now has a second option a few minutes off SR 417.
  • Drive Up starts working the day the store opens, which is genuinely useful when the July heat index is 105.
  • The Narcoossee corridor picks up a pressure valve. FDOT data cited by Spectrum News 13 counted an average of 38,000 vehicles per day on Narcoossee between SR 528 and the Osceola County line back in 2022, and that number has not gotten smaller.

Whether Narcoossee traffic actually thins out is worth watching over the next two quarters. The likelier outcome is that Lake Nona Boulevard itself gets busier, which is why Tavistock built the two roundabouts before it built the parking lot.

The Murals Are the Part You'll Notice First

Retail centers usually open with a banner and a ribbon. Lake Nona West is opening with 30 murals.

The public art program is being led by Chalk & Brush, a Miami studio founded by Cuban-born artist Cinthia "Cynno" Santos. It is the studio's largest mural installation to date, and the pieces are integrated across buildings and walkways rather than tucked into a single "art wall." Subject matter draws from Central Florida native flora and wildlife and from the communities the center serves.

For anyone who has watched the sculpture garden fill in next to the Lake Nona Wave Hotel over the last few years, this is a continuation of the same placemaking approach rather than a new direction. The practical effect is that the plaza reads as a walking district first and a strip center second. Bring a stroller. Bring visiting family. It photographs well.

Where the Food Actually Lands

The dining lineup is the part most likely to be misread from a press release. Here is the honest version.

Opening this year, but not all at once. Just Salad, Kilwins Ice Cream, Drybar, Gloss Nail Co., and JETSET Pilates make up an 8,078-square-foot cluster of smaller tenants that fill in the gaps between anchors. These are the everyday visits. Coffee, a quick lunch, a haircut before dinner.

Not opening this summer. Cañonita, the marquee restaurant, is targeted for late 2026 in a 9,321-square-foot space at 5947 Lake Nona Blvd. It is a $4.5 million buildout and the first Cañonita location outside The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, where the concept has run for roughly 25 years. If you have been telling friends you'll take them there in September, move the reservation to December.

Still the anchor of the local food scene. Boxi Park at 6877 Tavistock Lakes Blvd is not being replaced by any of this. The container park still runs live music Thursday through Sunday, still hosts festivals like Lake Nona Live on The Lawn, and still houses the Cañonita Street Taqueria, which is a separate concept with no announced closing plans. Boxi Park has a role. Lake Nona West has a different one. The two work together, not against each other.

Directory sites list roughly 40 restaurants across the broader Lake Nona area, from Canvas at Laureate Park to Chroma and Bacan in the Town Center, plus the everyday roster at Nona Place, Lake Nona Landing, and Eagle Creek Center. Lake Nona West adds convenience-grade options and one destination restaurant. It does not replace the sit-down inventory the community already has.

The Roundabouts, the Shuttle, and 20 EV Chargers

Two operational details deserve more attention than a shopping-center piece usually gives them.

The two roundabouts on Lake Nona Boulevard. Crews built them in front of the center before opening, specifically to keep Lake Nona Boulevard moving as retail traffic ramps up. If you have not driven them yet, the geometry is straightforward, but the pattern of drivers still learning to yield is not. Give yourself an extra minute the first few times.

Beep autonomous shuttles. Tavistock has stated it will run Beep shuttle service in and out of the plaza to keep parking-lot circulation from spilling onto the boulevard. Beep has been operating in Lake Nona for years. This is an extension of the existing route pattern rather than a new pilot.

A 20-stall Level 3 EV charging hub with Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging. The chargers are open to any EV driver, not just Mercedes vehicles, and are rated up to 400 kW, which means a compatible car can add meaningful range in the time it takes to check out at Homesense. That is a different value proposition from the Level 2 chargers already scattered around Town Center, which are designed for a longer visit. If you drive an EV, you now have a place to actually top up on a Saturday errand run.

Why the Rollout Matters More Than the Ribbon

Two data points to put next to each other. Lake Nona West was named Retail Deal of the Year by NAIOP Central Florida before it opened, and the Target lease itself was recognized by CoStar as the national Retail Deal of the Spring. Those are institutional bets that the community is now large enough to support this scale of retail on its own, without depending on Medical City workers or airport traffic.

The rollout is slow on purpose. Anchors first, so the flow patterns settle. Restaurants and lifestyle services later, once residents have already found the paths through the plaza. By the time Cañonita opens in late 2026 and the AdventHealth hospital opens in November on the medical side of the community, Lake Nona West will read as a fully operational district rather than a construction site with a Target inside it.

For anyone living within a few miles, the practical takeaway is that the errand map has already changed. Barnes & Noble is a legitimate reason to spend an hour on a Sunday afternoon. Total Wine takes over holiday shopping. Target rewrites the grocery routine. The rest fills in from there.

When You're Ready to Talk About the House Part

If the new center has you thinking about what a move into or across Lake Nona actually looks like, the honest answer is that the calculus varies by street, by builder, and by how quickly you need to be settled.
